Have you ever been a part of a flashlight egg hunt? It’s my favorite way to hunt Easter eggs.

When I was younger, my parents would host a flashlight egg hunt at our house for their 5th and 6th grade Sunday school students. The day after the big hunt, my brother and I would run to the field behind our house, Walmart sack in hand. We picked up dozens of eggs that were just scattered in the grass- in plain view now but hidden under a cloak of darkness the night before.

As I grew older, I started helping hide the eggs. Then once the search commenced, all the egg-hiders stationed ourselves around the backyard, ready to help the hunters find those in-plain-view eggs.

Sometimes I would tip-toe up to a kid and whisper, “Look up in that tree.” Her eyes would dart up and she excitedly waved her flashlight around the branches. After a minute or so, if her light still hadn’t landed on it, I would point more directly. If she still couldn’t find it, I’d ask for her flashlight and then shine the light on the egg.

Now, if another student had tried to take her flashlight away from her, she would have put up a fight to remain in control. But when someone who knew where the eggs were hidden took her flashlight, she willingly let go because she knew she’d find what she was looking for.

I wonder what the kids would do if they had the option of choosing to play the game without a flashlight and having to feel their way around the dark -OR- having someone who had hidden the eggs holding a flashlight beside them as they search. Which would they choose?
Would they choose control over their own journey or help in finding the eggs the quickest?

In life, we have that choice too. Are we going to trust God to guide us along the path He created for us? Or demand to do life on our own, without light, without a guide, but in “control.”

Trusting God with the flashlight is a scary endeavor. We can’t see the end of the path! The egg is still hidden when we begin the search. We can only see a few feet in front of us as we walk along in the flashlight’s beam. We must trust that God will lead us where we need to go.

Trusting God with our futures is really really hard, especially when things don't go as we planned. I want to learn to trust God even when it's hard.

Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and He will make your paths straight.”

God’s not gonna lead us off a cliff. He’s not going to drop us on our heads. So why do we have a hard time trusting him to guide us through life? He’s the one who wrote our story, who better to show us how to live it?

I need to trust God more. I need to trust him to have the next X amount of years figured out, even when the plans I made fall apart. I need to trust that his plans will never fail. God knows what He’s doing. I just have to trust him.

Trusting God is a really simple concept, but it’s hard for me to live out this concept. Maybe it’s hard for you too.

I don’t think I can give you “a three step plan to learn to trust God wholeheartedly in just 24 hours,” but here are a few things I’m going to do to learn to trust God more.

1. Pray without ceasing.

…As 1 Thessalonians 5:17 states. If I want to trust God with all my heart, I need to talk to him about everything. Even about the trials that I’m facing. Even about my fears and doubts.

2. Learn more about God.

… by reading my Bible. If I don’t know someone, I can’t very well trust them. Same goes for God- if I don’t know him, how can I expect myself to trust him? And I have a hunch that as I learn more about God I’ll learn how trustworthy He is.

3. Meditate on his Word.

Such as this verse: “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God and trust also in [Jesus].” -John 14:1 NLT. If I have God’s promises on the forefront of my mind, when I’m tempted to doubt I’ll have a weapon to thrust at my worry.

Trusting God with our futures is really really hard, especially when things don’t go as we planned. I want to learn to trust God even when it’s hard. I want to trust him even when I can’t see the end of the trail. I want to trust him with my flashlight so I can follow him wherever He leads.

In all honesty, I need to improve in all three areas. I really needed this message this morning because a dear family friend has just passed away and we are all asking “why.” In order to overcome not having those answers at hand, I need to trust God more. Thank you for your post.

I’m so sorry Elizabeth! :( That’s so awful! I definetly understand asking “Why?” after someone dies. A verse I turn to during these times of grief and not understanding is John 16:33, as well as the whole chapter of Lamentations 3. Keep trusting Him! Blessings <3

Oh my goodness! This post slapped me straight between the eyes! So thankful you shared this!! It’s so true though how it’s hard to trust God with the flashlight of our lives and step out in faith and trust that He isn’t going to lead us astray. I struggle with that so much. I struggle with wanting to be in “control” of everything when really, God deserves the reigns not me. When I decide to be selfish and think that I know better than God does, things get really messy. You would think all the times that’s happened that I would’ve learned my lesson, but God is growing me one baby step at a time. I found you on The Peony Project! Love your blog!

Thank you Hannah for your sweet and open reply! I’m glad this post helped you. And you’re right, God does grow us one baby step at a time. So thankful for that!

Good insight… Always keep a “good” battery in your flashlight.
Insight into God’s Word will keep the flashlight battery charged
with a strong beam showing into the path ahead.
    love U.

Me too, Adriana. It seems like such a simple concept, and yet I still find myself worrying when I should be praying. Thank goodness God has new mercies every morning!
